The Frikstailers are a Cordoba Argentina based electronic music duo. 1/2 of the team, DJ Rafa Caivan, came through Chicago last year with the Zizek Records tour and I had the pleasure of spending a day showing him ’round the Chi.
They’ve got a new record out which features Mashit’s own MC Zulu on a couple of tracks, including a remix of “Ransom the Senator.” Here’s a teaser for ya:
Revolt Into Style is a new UK based label with an international outlook. Our aim is to release quality music across genre and style, releasing work by the freshest producers and bands from Argentina’s electronica scene and new talent from Europe. Our working relationship with Latin American label Pino Rec is the foundation on which the business is built. We plan initially to focus attention on the talented producers and artists on the Pino Rec roster, and ultimately to nurture creative collaborations between European and Latin American artists.
On our debut release, the ‘Baile Frik EP’ the Frikstailers come very correct with the title track, a breakbeat baile funk bomb, before remixing Chicago’s MC Zulu to stunning effect; Truthfully is a reggaeton-cumbia-hip hop hybrid, while Ransom The Senator is a glitchy dancehall banger. Also present is an electro booty remix from Peter Digital Orchestra (who releases twisted bleeding-edge hip hop under his Fulgeance moniker.)
DJ C’s Mashit label has been going hard and not even considering going home throughout 2008 with releases from the label boss himself, alongside DJ Flack, Zulu, Bong Ra and Murderbot. Coming on like a bottom end Santa Claus, DJ C dropped some yultide cheer at the tail end of the year with a split release that went some way towards representing the new sound of Caracas - four tracks from the prolific producer Cardopusher (who recently dropped his Hyperdub debut), and three from new kid on the Venezuelan block, Pacheko. It’s not a particular surprise to find this pairing back to back - both seem entwined in each other’s back catalogue, with various remixes and mixtapes ricocheting between them. Pacheko also counts Starkey amongst his cohorts - with another recent split single (on Lo Dubs) and a remix from the Philadelphia producer.
The original version of the track below, ‘Green Bull’, features on the Mashit single, ‘This Troy’, however this sprightly bleep’n’bass version is released as a non-EP teaser. It’s a fair reflection of Pacheko’s output thus far - a producer with a cheeky spring in his dubstep, unafraid to rub electro melodies and pop-skank rhythms with his heavy bass treatments. Remeber that dude Zebbler who came to international attention for getting arrested during the Boston Mooninite “Bomb” scare? Curious what he’s been up to? He sent over this kind of amazing music video recently. The music is like epoch-jungle-trance and the video has naked people! It’s really well put together and pushes some boundries:
…Get To The Truth was created by Zebbler Encanti Experience, a Boston-based audio-visual immersive performance duo. We are generally known to use heavy a/v effects in our performances, which makes this piece remarkably restrained. Get To The Truth instead uses human body and nature as its central focus. The video itself reflects on the magnetic effects of human culture/flesh to our individual psyche and the perennial attempt to reach beyond the box we are confined to.
It was shot in various spots in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, with the final mountain shot taking place on the morning of the US presidential election (Nov 4th, 2008).
