Back in ‘07 Mashit partnered with Kid Kameleon and the London-based music and culture portal, Spannered to bring you 2 mixes of low-end revelry. Now we’ve decided to ally once again.
Kid K is back with the bass, but this time the treble is tweaked in a most explicit manor. The sounds are “extremely small and precise.” That’s how the Kid describes this breed of esoteric, minimal-dubstep-esque material. Give it a listen and define the genre for yourself:
The Frikstailers are a Cordoba Argentina based electronic music duo. 1/2 of the team, DJ Rafa Caivan, came through Chicago last year with the Zizek Records tour and I had the pleasure of spending a day showing him ’round the Chi.
They’ve got a new record out which features Mashit’s own MC Zulu on a couple of tracks, including a remix of “Ransom the Senator.” Here’s a teaser for ya:
Revolt Into Style is a new UK based label with an international outlook. Our aim is to release quality music across genre and style, releasing work by the freshest producers and bands from Argentina’s electronica scene and new talent from Europe. Our working relationship with Latin American label Pino Rec is the foundation on which the business is built. We plan initially to focus attention on the talented producers and artists on the Pino Rec roster, and ultimately to nurture creative collaborations between European and Latin American artists.
On our debut release, the ‘Baile Frik EP’ the Frikstailers come very correct with the title track, a breakbeat baile funk bomb, before remixing Chicago’s MC Zulu to stunning effect; Truthfully is a reggaeton-cumbia-hip hop hybrid, while Ransom The Senator is a glitchy dancehall banger. Also present is an electro booty remix from Peter Digital Orchestra (who releases twisted bleeding-edge hip hop under his Fulgeance moniker.)
Well, here we are in 2009. The turn of the century is almost over. The Oh-Ohs have been too NAUGHTy. It’s time for change; Lets get some ones in our two thousands!
But that’s for next year. Right now I’d like to take a look back at last year. I was asked by the 88 Music Blog to submit one of those top 10 lists that everyone seems to do around the new year, and here’s what I cam up with:
DJ C’s Top 10 Tracks Most Dropped in a 2008 DJ Set (in no particular order, with links to buy or find out more)
I’ve been lovin’ these guys’ bassline raver tracks. They just sent over the DJ mix below which is a great showcase of their sound.
A couple of their tracks are posted for free DL over at Palms Out Sounds and they’re definitely worth checkin’, but I highly recommend their digi-EP called “Rave Lord” which is available at Juno Download ->
Earlier this month Barack Obama won the US Presidency. At Grant Park in Chicago hundreds of thousands of people celebrated in unity as he gave his victory speach. It was an incredible experience, but I didn’t realize ’til the next day, when I saw this AP video essy, just how incredible:
That was Tuesday, November 4, ‘08. Three days later I had a gig in Chicago, at Bass Goes Boom, the montly party at Lava. I decided to start my set with Obama’s speach. The crowd went wild! Unfortunately I was too busy dancing pay attention to my mixing, but none-the-less I think today — Thanksgiving — is a good time to share the mix.
Tomorrow I’ll be in Indiana to help get folks to the polls, after which I’ll be heading over to Obama’s election night party in Chicago’s Grant Park, so stay tuned to our Twitter feed for updates.
Last time I was touring around Europe DJ Elected invited me to play at one of his Harlem Jungle parties in Amsterdam. I can’t remember exactly how we made contact, but I hadn’t been aware of his music before that. Since that time I’ve become a big fan. He’s been producing and releasing some serious tunes on his Sirkus Recordings label, in addition to making some great bootleg/remix tracks and dope DJ mixes. Here are some examples:
I’m noticing an emerging theme; M.I.A. has been inspiring some hip-hop activism on her remixes. I’m glad to see her and Jay Z (!) taking the lead by talking about leadership. Jay seems to realize that his piece of the bling-pie will be eaten by someone much more wealthy than him if he doesn’t speak up and push for change.
Gotta get Bush out the chair.
Give Obama the floor.
Lets bring back Ragen,
at least we were gettin’ that raw.
These Politicians don’t give a s***
The hood’s still gettin’ ingnored
Then there’s this Paper Planes remix by Rock City that I posted recently.
I ride for Obama
I ain’t messin’ with McCain
Stop the War on Terror
Cause we ready for a change
Gas prices to high
Plus these jobs ain’t payn’
I ain’t a politician
But my N**** I’m sane
Obama ‘08
Doesn’t that sound great
My president is black
Yours is a disgrace
